The first Orchard Project Mukti Mission opened, is Orchard Project: Nutmeg, caring for both girls and boys. The original property was owned by another organization and Mukti partnered to care for the resident children. Over three hundred girls and boys have called this Project home over the years. Many have gone on to hold jobs in government, medical and legal fields, teachers, and even one pastor. The current supervisor is a graduate of the home.
Mukti assumed ownership of the property which dated back to about 1960. Over time the property has deteriorated. The old girl's dorm building is being leveled and a new one constructed. The architecture will be identical to the newly opened Orchard Project: Nimboo. A grant of US$ 220,000 has been given by a generous donor and this campaign seeks to meet the remaining need toward completion of construction.
Construction and occupancy is targeted for late fall 2025.
Orchard Projects are the expansion of Mukti Mission across India. Currently, there are seventeen (15) projects in seven (7) states of India with over 700 children enrolled. Orchard Project: Vazhaipoo opened in July 2024 with 6 boys being cared for by Mukti. Orchard Project: Nimboo (Lemon) opened on November 12th, 2024 with an initial occupancy of 15 girls in residency.
The goal is to open new Orchard Project homes as the funds become available. Each Orchard Project costs about $600,000 to build from scratch. This includes the purchase of the property, building the security wall, construction of the home, and the myriad infrastructure pieces as well as furnishing of the home.
