The Lydia Story … rather, Store!

A little of this, a little of that!

Mahila* surveyed the small Lydia Store with a big smile that stretched from her heart and spread across her face. She was satisfied with what she saw. Confidently, she hopped up to the counter and sat down, resting her crutch against the wall.

The glowing proprietress is one of Mukti’s handicapped women. She has no use of her left side with her useless arm and leg often rigid with spasticity. Her smile belies her handicap. Mahila came to the Mission at the age of six; she has grown up here and received an education in Mission schools. In addition, she attended two years of Bible College and then completed 11th and 12th grades (called Jr College in India). She has also completed a theological course by extension. Her love for Jesus shines on her countenance and her desire to be of worthwhile service to Him and to others is her passion: perhaps like a modern-day Lydia of the Bible—and hence the name, The Lydia Store.

The Lydia Store is situated at the Mission’s front gate, recently having celebrated its 19th anniversary. All sorts of things are available for staff and local village residents to purchase, from cold water and soft drinks, and snacks of many varieties.

Before taking charge of the store, Mahila worked for four years in the Reception Office, answering telephone calls and recording information on the many Mission visitors. Now, over forty, Mahila’s pleasant demeanor lights up her little shop. She cheerfully assembles her customers’ purchases, offering words of encouragement.
